Interests: Research Interests: The management agency in Western Australia responsible for national parks and nature reserves is the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM). For a number of years now commercial apiarists have been calling for increased access to these areas. Presently CALM have refused as it is possible these hives will have a detrimental impact on native systems. Unfortunately, little research has been done in this area to date. CALM therefore offered a scholarship to research possible impacts, which I took up in June 1998. At this preliminary stage I only have a general idea of what I will be doing. The study will be established in the northern sandplains, north of Perth. It will more than likely look at the fruit set and seed set of a number of important plant species in the area. I also hope to study the reproductive success of one or two native pollinators in the area, probably native bees.
